In today's' classrooms, teachers are finding it more and more challenging to get students engaged in putting fourth effort in school related studies. However, students are not going to give their all if they feel it is for nothing, that is were recognition provided by the teacher comes in. There are many ways to encourage motivation to increase effort and tools to provide the proper recognition. As stated by Marzano, "Effort and recognition speak the attitudes and beliefs of students, and teachers must show the connection between effort and achievement." In addition, according to research by Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, not all students know the connection between effort and achievement. This instructional strategy can improve learning by, using some of the helpful activities and techniques provided by Robert Marzano and others to get students interested in learning. The way this strategy can improve teaching,is by encouraging teachers to get more involved with their students and know them on a more personal level. This will allow them to find ways to motivate and teach students according to their learning level. The climate to make this Strategy effective must be a positive and uplifting one, if not, this strategy will have no effect on the teacher or his/her students.
Guidelines given by Marzano and others to "Encourage Effort and Provide Recognition" include but are not limited to:
Teach Relationship between effort and achievement
Use of Rubrics to help students see the relationships between their efforts and achievements
Make clear the real goal of effort
Along with verbal recognition, use concrete tokens
Recognize individual students for personal progress
Recognition should only be given for legitimate achievement
praise, prompt, praise strategy
Encouraging Effort:
Reinforcing and Tracking Student Effort:
Students Self -Effort Rubric
The effort rubric allows the students to independently monitor their own progress
and see what areas thy are doing well in and what areas need improvement.
Other forms to promote effort can include: Extra Credit Share stories about people who have succeeded by not giving up Offer help to those who may be falling behind or need extra help/time, and praise them when assignment is complete (regardless of how long it takes them)
Providing Recognition:
Electronic portfolio
Allows the student to visually see their achievements and growth
Certificate
Certificates are physical incentives that allow the student to see that the teacher recognizes their work well done.
Other forms of recognition can include: Positive letters sent home to parents Verbal recognition Stickers Tokens

The wiki can be of use to others, because it provides information and research found by others that could be of use to someone looking for helpful hits and ideas. Wikis are not geared for teacher use only , but for the use of students as well. One teacher Davis, Vicki uses it to reward good behavior and she even set up a "Hall of Fame" which she finds to be a good motivator.
