A graphic organizer is a visual representation of knowledge that structures information by arranging important aspects of a concept or topic into a pattern using labels. They help students to:

  • Organize abstract thoughts on paper,
  • Show relationships between topics and ideas, and
  • Preserve and recollect information.

How Can graphic organizers help out students?

Graphic organizers can be used as a tool to engage the students at the onset of an assignment. Then they can be used as the guide for the assignment and will also keep the student focused on the material's content. After the assignment the student may use the graphic organizer to study another concept in further detail.

What types of graphic organizers are there?
  • Hierarchical organizers, use main ideas and supporting details with a top to bottom flow arrangement,
  • Comparative organizers, use likes and differences to organize thought,
  • Sequential organizers, use time as their main organization point of reference.
