Kinesthetic Learners = Hands on Learners
A kinesthetic learner takes in new information best by engaging in hands on activities. We have a harder time sitting through lectures or teaching that requires us to sit for long periods of time. When we use many different muscle groups while learning we tend to retain more information. We prefer to learn by being physically or directly involved.
Strategies or techniques to help Kinesthetic learners:
blocks and clay
experiments
group work
field trips
projects
activities
role play
games
In class techniques to improve learning:
One of the best tools a teacher has with younger students is anything they can hold in their hand to learn. A good example is blocks for younger kids to learn mathematics. For older students getting up and walking while reviewing flash cards is a good way to incorporate a muscle group into the memorization. Changing the color or the terms and matching the terms to the definitions is also a way to make the mundane memorization process easier and more fun. Finding new ways of making the old homework style an active experience is the key to a more smooth educational experience for kinesthetic learners. We all learn better in our own way. For kids that seem to be a little feisty and over active with little attentions spans, this is a great way to get them excited about school and learning.
